11:36 pm - Birthday
I'm now 24. It's not much different from 23. Here's how I spent my day: cake for breakfast, work in the lab, lunch, class, cake for a snack (2 pieces), class (where I had a cupcake), dinner with a friend (no cake), NCIS, House, and Batman slash fanfiction. Totally procrastinated doing my presentation for tomorrow. All in all, it was a good day. Plus I get more cake on Saturday. ^_^

This is not cool. It's April, and it snowed last night- enough to make it white outside. This is not a good start to the day.

8:18 pm - Hurray!
I have unofficially passed my organic chemistry qualifier exam! I just have to get word from the head of the department for it to be official. Thank goodness, as I have been stressing about this thing for months. I reallllllly didn't want to have to take it a second time. Happy day!

9:52 pm - Snow!
Well, it finally happened. We got deluged with snow (and of course my school was the only one not to cancel). I dug out my car and went to work. Then I dug out my car and drove home. I'm ready for spring now.

11:22 pm - Interesting News
"The döner kebab, a Turkish sandwich made with minced lamb, has surpassed the sausage as Germany's favorite fast food item, according to the German Government's new 'Manual for Germany'. The manual is published to attract skilled immigrant workers to Germany."

I can't say I'm surprised. Oh döner kebabs, how I miss you.

8:14 pm - Still alive
Yes, I'm still alive. School starting directly resulted in my free time decreasing dramatically (not that I had a lot to begin with). I've got three classes this semester, TAing the little kiddies in organic chem, and doing lab work. The three jobs in one thing is wearing at me, but I'm hanging in. As usual, chocolate helps.

9:44 pm - Update
So I haven't updated in a while. In the interim, I went on a wonderful cruise with my family. We went to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Amazingly (since I'm so into Greek mythology), Istanbul was my favorite. I heartily recommend it. Santorini, one of the Greek islands, was also one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Coming back to Syracuse and work was definitely difficult, but the hardship was mitigated by seeing my boyfriend again. ^_^

The past couple weeks since I've been back have been crazy. It's been crazy hot, and I've been trying to keep in shape with exercise class and swimming. And I've been crazy busy at work. Unfortunately, my advisor comes up with brilliant new ideas every once in a while. These ideas involve having to drop your own work to start whatever shiny new project he fancies. This week has made me so frustrated. Monday I had to drive around a truck on errands to places all over Syracuse. Now those who know me well know that I hate driving, let alone not my own car (esp a truck), and definitely not to places unknown. And then today he gave me enough work to take five good days and expected me to have it all done by the end of today. Needless to say I quit at 9 when I felt like I was going to start crying.

Three highlights of the week: spent quality time with the boyfriend, my cat recovered from the trauma of visiting with my parents' cats, and I got to talk to some Austrians. Appararently there are a bunch of them in an exchange program at Syracuse University. I went to a lecture there, heard Austrian dialect, and had immediate Heimweh. I turned around and asked them where they were from (Graz). And the complemented my German. So that was nice.

Now I need to eat something so I can get up early and to more work. We're off on a sampling trip next week, and I must pack.

7:36 pm - Shoes and Cruise
Only a few days left before I leave on my mediterranean family cruise extravaganza, and I'm nowhere near ready. But I'm very excited. I've bought two dresses, a swimsuit, and now shoes. I've done laundry; I have yet to pack. And unfortunately my advisor decided I have to apply for a fellowship whose proposal is due before I get back. So it looks like I'm doing work on the cruise. Ick. But I won't let it get me down. Mediterranean here I come!

11:41 pm - OMG
So I now apparently have a boyfriend. Who used to be a good friend. And since I haven't dated since *cough* ninth grade *cough* and have no idea what I'm doing, I am now quietly freaking out. Just thought I'd share. Oh, and I handed in my last paper today and am officially done with my first year of grad school. It's definitely been a day.

I've got the best friends in the world. Today I got a package in the mail with Austrian candy, and I want to thank Katie and Caitlin sooooo much. You girls made my day. And I really needed to be cheered up, since I'm stuck here doing work over Easter. Gleichfalls, Frohe Ostern.

P.S. Katie looks adorable with rabbit ears.

Today it reached 75 degrees Fahrenheit. My friend Chris and I walked to get lunch, and I just wanted to bask in the sunshine like a cat (a nap wouldn't have gone wrong either). And lunch was delightful (mmm, turkey, sundried tomato, and herby cream cheese on a bagel). I will hold this afternoon of sunny bliss close to my heart this weekend as it rains and I'm stuck inside doing homework, studying, and grading. On the plus side, I've got another Smallville DVD coming tomorrow. Doses of Lex Luthor will keep me going.

So apparently I-81 is a time machine. I left home today around 1:30. The sun was shining, and it was too warm to wear a coat. An hour north, I start driving through rain, then snow, then hail. I get to Syracuse at 4, and I'm scrambling for my winter coat to brave the wind and snow to get from my car to my lab. So, in roughly two hours, I managed to travel from spring back to winter. An amazing and highly irritating experience.

10:41 pm - Chores and Exams
I am taking a break from cleaning to update. Yes, I am finally cleaning my apartment. I don't think my dishes have been done in a couple weeks. The papers have been piling up in the living room. I've been breathing in dust, and my bathroom's pretty gross. But that is all getting fixed this week, now that the first round of exams is done. The first one (the quiz from hell) I thankfully didn't fail - getting a 22 out of 30. It is sad that I am happy with that kind of grade, but the smart kid only got a 25, so that's alright. My SpecID exam went okay, but the proctor who administered it messed up, so our professor gave us the opportunity to do it over for class tomorrow. Now I was pretty sure that I had done okay, but of course I did it all over (just in case). Sometimes I wonder about me. Of course, we haven't gotten back the water chem exam, which is the one that really worries me (I'm pretty sure I bombed the 30 point question). But now is not the time to worry about that. Now is the time for cleaning and...fanfiction reading. We all need a break, right?

8:54 pm - Happy Valentine's to me
So today I got screwed. And not in the fun way that most people look forward to on Valentine's. The lesson I learned today is that one of my professors is even more of an incompetent bastard than I thought. Long story short: we were supposed to have an exam in my natural products class this Thursday. Now, I am not very good in this class, and I know it. It's all complicated organic chem that I haven't taken for three and a half years, and I was going to do the right thing and spend a good chunk of time tonight and tomorrow studying. Silly me with my attempts at planning. So I get to class today, and my professor promptly announces that we will be attending a lecture on Thursday (all three of us in the class). I think, hey, good - if he's pushing the test back, then maybe I'll get a little more time to study. Silly me, again. Then the bastard announces that he will be giving us a quiz today, at which point my eyes open in total horror. Because I had not yet studied. And so I quite likely failed. Ugh. I am so pissed right now, and on top of that I'm alone on Valentine's yet again. Stop mocking me, you stupid holiday. I shall simply be forced to eat cheesecake and watch TV all night. Who needs good grades or a boyfriend when you have cheesecake?

Brainy Student
62% Tastefulness, 51% Originality, 42% Deliberateness, 22% Sexiness
[Tasteful Original Random Prissy]

Your style is classic but not glamorous. You don't concentrate on clothes an awful lot, preferring to spend your time on more interesting matters. You don't want to look like everyone else and your probably take care to have a unique element or two in your outfits, just to emphasize your personality, but, on the other hand, you don't need too much attention paid to your looks. Believe it or not, fashion says some things about character. You're probably quite an intellectual and somewhat reserved. But your style is not bad.

The opposite style from yours is Sex Bomb [Flamboyant Conventional Deliberate Sexy].

3:30 pm - Summary
This past week I survived:

6 Class lectures (almost fell asleep)
3 Fitness classes (kill me now)
2 Gen Chem labs (resisted the urge to kill straggling student who took forever)
1.5 Days doing Real Work in the lab (go me!)
1 Suprise assigment (ugh. I hate professors with no syllabus)
1 Meeting with my major Professor (eep)
...and a partridge in a pear tree (well, not really. Actually it was a stolen car stuck on a hill behind our lab. The driver ran away, and when the police towed the car, it rolled down the hill into one of their own police cars. Classic entertainment.)

The semester has officially started for real. On the plus side, I "survived." And I got to watch 6 episodes of House, M.D. And a friend of mine had a bake sale. I think the brownie tipped this past week into the good side of things. Now I just need to gear up to do it all over again. I think I need more chocolate.

10:10 pm - Toasty Warm
I have discovered the joy that is long underwear. Also, I have a new appreciation for Schiwoche. That was the fateful week in Austria where I overcame my fears and learned how to ski - a great personal triumph. But I just discovered an even better result. Recently I discovered the tights I bought for skiing and made the connection: it's cold when you are skiing, and it is bloody cold in Syracuse. So for the past several days I have been wearing my insulating tights under my jeans, and I couldn't be happier. Yay for warmth! (Now if only it would stop snowing).
